Updates:

January 9, 2022:

Roofing and carpentry continue on the threshing barn. Doors will be completed this week. The pole barn is finished and the sheep are enjoying their new quarters until they can go into the threshing barn!

January 3, 2022:

This week we received a shipment of some exciting finishing details: iron hinges handmade by master blacksmith, Dean Rantz, of Rock Village Forge in Middleborough, MA. These hinges (pictured above) will be installed in the threshing barn in the coming weeks. Dean has also produced other metalwork items in use around the estate, including an iron railing in the newly renovated staircase in the Gore Mansion.

December 28, 2022:

After the crew took a well-deserved holiday break, they have continued this week with the roofing for the pole barn. This roofing is expected to be completed this week. Next, the crew will begin the roofing for the threshing barn.

December 14, 2022:

The timber frame construction for our threshing barn was completed this morning by Hardwick Post and Beam. To celebrate the occasion, a whetting bush (made from an evergreen bough, pictured above) was placed atop the new frame. This is an old tradition amongst timber framers, one that honors and thanks the trees for providing the materials.

December 13, 2022:

1. We've made great progress this week at the Farm. The pole barn structure has been completed and its floor needs some additional work.
2. The threshing barn is being framed today and tomorrow by the crew from Hardwick Post & Beam and then the roofing will begin.
3. The sheep are very happy with the progress and they are waiting in their pastures to move into their new home!

December 5, 2022:

1. The pole barn now has a roof base and the siding and trim work on the structure continues.
2. A dry well has been installed west of the threshing barn and pathways are being laid out.
3. The rough site work will be completed by the end of this week.

November 28, 2022:

  1. The concrete floor for the threshing barn has been poured into place (pictured above.)
  2. The framing for the pole barn is underway.
  3. The sidewalk for the curb cut will be poured this week.

November 21, 2022:

Work continues at the barn site this week before a break for Thanksgiving. The poles for the west wall of the pole barn are now in place and the installation of the utilities is underway. Drainage swales and a large dry well are under construction. Let's hope that the weather stays cool and dry! Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

November 09, 2022:

  1. The foundation for the threshing barn is now in place.

  2. Backfilling to replace the soil that was removed as the foundation was prepared will happen tomorrow and Friday.

  3. All extra soil from the project will stay at Gore Place to spread on the fields or to create new garden areas.

  4. Later this week or early next week the floor for the threshing barn will be poured.

October 24, 2022:

Gore Place is excited to announce that construction is starting on our reproduction, early 19th-century threshing barn. The framing timbers and boards are being prepared at the Hardwick, Massachusetts facilities of Hardwick Post and Beam, a multigenerational company of craftspeople specializing in traditional construction techniques. They will assemble the barn, onsite, in the coming weeks. During this time, the sheep have been moved to a different area of the Farm for their comfort and safety, where they will remain out of sight for visitors temporarily until the barn is completed. Click here to read our full press release.

We will be updating this page with more information and exciting news soon! Make sure to check back.
