Gore Place Receives Three Grants From the Mass Cultural Council
This year, the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency, has awarded three grants to Gore Place, the early 19th-century historic site in Waltham and Watertown Massachusetts; a Cultural Sector Recovery grant of $75,000, a Universal Participation Initiative grant of $5,000, and a Cultural Investment Portfolio grant of $19,900.
For eighty-eight years, Gore Place has been a resource to the community, providing educational and recreational opportunities for the people of Massachusetts and the world, drawing visitors from every part of the globe. With participants from all around New England and New York, the annual Sheepshearing Festival, alone, brings ten thousand visitors a year, adding tens of thousands of tourist dollars to the Commonwealth. The MCC’s ongoing support for Gore Place is vital to that work.
Executive Director Susan Robertson says, "We are grateful that much of the money granted by the MCC is unrestricted and thus available to help cover general operating costs, a fact much appreciated by a small institution such as ours, particularly during the Covid crisis, when many sources of revenue dried up. The Mass Cultural Council understands and responds quickly to the needs of our community and cultural institutions in a way that is quite remarkable."
Mass Cultural Council funds reach every community in the Commonwealth. Its mission is to promote excellence, education, access, and diversity in the arts, humanities, and sciences, to improve the quality of life for all Massachusetts residents, and contribute to the vitality of our communities and economy.
