The Butler Takes Charge | Webinar June 2020

In June 2020, Gore Place historian Diann Strausberg led a webinar entitled, The Butler Takes Charge. In it, she explored the work of author, abolitionist and domestic servant Robert Roberts. For Roberts, quiet activism was woven through everything he did and a successful dinner party could do more than just demonstrate a servant’s job mastery. The webinar recording is included at this link. This recording features real-time closed captions.

Virtual Concert with Emerald Rae and Jamie Balmer

There’s nothing like attending a live performance in the Carriage House at Gore Place. The sound is wonderful, and you get to sit right up close to the performer. We can’t wait to get back in there!

In the meantime, we thought we’d keep the music going with links to performances by some of our favorite musicians, including some sneak previews of what’s in store. Check back each Tuesday for more.

Guitarist Jamie Balmer has performed here as a solo and with Joseph Ricker as Duo Orpheo. He’ll be performing a solo Carriage House Concert on Tuesday, June 9 at 7:30 pm. Until then, here’s a clip of Jamie performing “Undercurrents” by Kevin Callahan.

You can hear more of Jamie’s music on his website at https://www.jbalmer.com/

Next, we have one of our favorite performers, Emerald Rae. Emerald has performed several Carriage House Concerts and was a featured performer at last year’s Fiddlers on the Farm. Emerald is a gifted singer and songwriter. She’s also an outstanding fiddler. Here’s a clip of Emerald singing and playing the traditional tune Rain and Snow recorded January 8, 2019 at the Rockwood Music Hall, Stage 3. Video by Cadence Independent Media.

You can hear more of Emerald’s music on her website https://www.emeraldrae.com/

Many musicians depend on the money they make from live performances. While venues are temporarily closed, they are turning to the internet, livestreaming performances from home and counting on donations. Now would be a good time to support your favorite artists.

Virtual Moonlight Tour

We live in a world of light, going about our business regardless of the hour. What would it be like to live before the electric light? Find out in our first Virtual Moonlight Tour!

Designed to be entertaining for the whole family, Virtual Moonlight Tours are video clips, lasting about 10 minutes. Each Virtual Moonlight Tour focuses on one aspect of life at Gore Place in the early 1800s.

Virtual Concert with Sylvia Berry

Sylvia Berry has performed many Carriage House Concerts, both as a soloist and as part of the Berry Collective. Sylvia is a wonderful performer and great raconteur. Her stories about composers, their lives and their inspirations enliven every performance. Here are two clips of Sylvia. Enjoy!

The temporary loss of our concert space and tours means the loss of much needed revenue for the museum as well. We're grateful for all donations that keep the museum operating through these difficult times.
