glass, and activities
appropriate for children

grounds are snow-covered,

snowshoes will also

Born in 1775, Austen
( Emma, Pride
and Prejudice, Sense
and Sensibility et al) lived
her entire life in England until
her death in1817. Christopher and
Rebecca Gore lived in England from
1796 to 1804. The grand mansion they
built in Waltham, Massachusetts in
1806 features both French and English
influence in the design and greatly
resembles the manor houses described
in Austens novels.

Festival

This popular outdoor event takes
place over several acres of the beautiful
45-acre estate. Visitors enjoy demonstrations
of sheep shearing, herding dogs,
spinning and weaving.
Children may try their hand at gardening
activities with the Waltham Garden
Club and everyone enjoys the
craft fair, wagon rides, live
music, Morris dancers, magic shows,
historic demonstrators, and farm
animals.

Dance Band

by a great 18-piece "big
band"!
Currently under the direction of Kurt
Thaller, the band was founded in Waltham
in 1980 and was first directed by
Paul Rooney. The members, many
of them retired professional musicians,
receive no compensation for their
performances. Engagement fees
are used to provide college scholarships
for musically-talented students. To
date, they have disbursed more than
$130,000 in financial aid.
