Take A Walk:
Winter Schedule
Mon thru Fri, 10-3
Starting Feb 23, Sat, 11-3.
Explore the open spaces and hidden places on this 45-acre estate. With Gore Place's winter “activity packs”, children and their accompanying adults can search for animal tracks; identify trees by their shapes, needles, or pinecones; and visit the llama, sheep, goats, chickens and rabbits at our farm. Each borrowed backpack contains binoculars, a magnifying glass, and activities appropriate for children ages 3-9. When the grounds are snow-covered, children's and adult's snowshoes will also be available. This is a great activity for winter school vacation!

One hour rental is $5 per backpack and $5 per pair of snowshoes. Free parking. Just ring the bell at the Mansion to get your backpack and begin your winter adventure!

Winter Weekend Tour

Enjoy a guided tour of the Governor Gore mansion in Waltham. The home has been called the Monticello of the North and architectural historians consider it to be the most significant Federal period mansion in New England.

Jane Austen Tours

During these special tours, a guide in period costume will use the famous author's own words to describe the décor of the mansion and the gracious lifestyle of the Gores.

Born in 1775, Austen ( Emma, Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility et al) lived her entire life in England until her death in1817. Christopher and Rebecca Gore lived in England from 1796 to 1804. The grand mansion they built in Waltham, Massachusetts in 1806 features both French and English influence in the design and greatly resembles the manor houses described in Austens novels.

The English tradition of afternoon tea plays an important part in Austen's novels. Why not add traditional tea to your visit? After your tour, bring your ticket to the Tea Leaf tearoom, located nearby at 487 Moody Street in Waltham. You will receive a 10% savings on the traditional three-course afternoon tea service (reservations required). Ticket valid for afternoon tea discount through April 15, 2008.

21st annual Sheepshearing Festival
Sat, April 26, 10-4

This popular outdoor event takes place over several acres of the beautiful 45-acre estate. Visitors enjoy demonstrations of sheep shearing, herding dogs, spinning and weaving. Children may try their hand at gardening activities with the Waltham Garden Club and everyone enjoys the craft fair, wagon rides, live music, Morris dancers, magic shows, historic demonstrators, and farm animals.

$10, ages 12 & under and members free.
Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Additional charge for wagon rides and house tours.
Food vendors on site. Free parking.
No dogs or other pets allowed.

Independence Tour

In the early 1800s Independence Day (July 4) was one of the few holidays celebrated by the new nation. Many of our modern traditions and symbols find their origins in this time.

As a Bostonian and a Federalist politician Christopher Gore, his friends, and associates and his social circle were eyewitnesses and participants to the birth ofthe United States. The Eagle Has Landed!

Did you know that our national symbol as almost the Wild Turkey? That was Benjamin Franklin's choice. In the end, of course, it was the bald eagle that won the day.

Wildlife rehabilitator and former state wildlife biologist, Tom Ricardi, gives an up-close look and tells the life story of his hawks, falcons, owls, and, of course, bald eagles. Come see why this majestic bird is considered the ultimate American raptor.

Altschuler-Caplan Ensemble

Program: Exotic Dances & Love Songs
Composers: Piazzolla, Paganini, De Falla, Massanet, Gershwin, Schubert, Rodrigo, and more.

Emil Altschuler, violin - One of America's finest up and coming virtuoso violinists, Emil Altschuler, performs at a world class standard and possesses a commanding stage presence. He holds degrees from The Juilliard School and The Yale School of Music. Master violinist, Erick Friedman, wrote of him: “…a very gifted violinist who possesses the talent and capability to become a truly outstanding violinist of his generation… and sound and accuracy of intonation that are truly extraordinary.”  

 

Aaron Larget-Caplan - With performances in Spain, Italy, & on both US coasts as a soloist & chamber musician, Aaron Larget-Caplan is quietly emerging in the classical world as a unique performer and who can communicate difficult and traditional music as well as various art forms to his audience.

Emil and Aaron will be joined by cellist Josiah Altschuler for part of the program.

Boston Chamber Ensemble
Wednesday, July 16, 7pm

The Boston Chamber Ensemble offers a program of music from the world of Jane Austen arranged for flute and strings including works by Jean-Josephe Mouret, Giuseppe Maria Cambini, François Devienne, Franz Anton Hoffmeister, and more. The program coincides beautifully with the Jane Austen Tours of Gore Place July 18 and 20.

BCE has a history of collaborating with performance organizations in music and the other artistic disciplines. Richard Buell of the Boston Globe has called the performance of the Boston Chamber Ensemble "spellcasting".

Gerry Beaudoin Trio
Wednesday, July 23, 7pm

Called, “One of New England's premier jazz guitarists” by Just Jazz Guitar Magazine, Gerry Beaudoin has appeared on over twenty recordings in his career since his first national release in 1990.

A “guitarist's guitarist”, Gerry has appeared or recorded with the elite of the jazz and blues guitar world including: John and Bucky Pizzarelli, Howard Alden, Jimmy Bruno, Frank Vignola, Ronnie Earl, Duke Robillard, J. Geils, Hubert Sumlin, Jimmy Vivino, and Andy Summers of the Police.

Gerry will be joined by Rich Greenblatt, vibes, and Duke Robillard, bass.

Santiago Dìaz

Here is your chance to enjoy a performance by one of the top classical guitarists of the region in the beautiful setting of the 1806 mansion.

A native of Mexico, Santiago Dìaz began playing guitar at the age of 13 at the National School of Music in Mexico City and made his first public recital two years later at the Sala Huehuecóyotl. Acclaimed for his lyrical and passionate performances, Santiago is one of the leading virtuoso guitarists of his generation and is an active concert guitarist in both Mexico and the United States. Santiago will perform works by Manuel Maria Ponce,   Mauro Giuliani, Joaquin Rodrigo, and more.

Appraisal Day

Have you a family treasure or a mysterious object you've always wondered about? Is it an antique? What is it worth? Have your questions answered by appraisers from Kaminski Auctioneers & Appraisers of Beverly , Massachusetts . Appraisals are shared with the audience in a forum setting just outside the 1793 carriage house (or inside if raining). This is a great way to learn more about antiques and collectibles.

Antiques and collectibles of all kinds are welcome including: furniture, porcelain, silver, books, paintings, rugs and works of art. Coins, stamps, and jewelry will not be appraised. If an object is not easily transportable, a good quality photograph may be used instead.

$10 per item; $25 for 3 items. Numbers will be passed out beginning at 12:45 P.M. on a first-come basis.


Concert for the Community with
The Soft Touch Dance Band
Sunday, September 14 at 5pm.
Enjoy a free Concert on the beautiful grounds at Gore Place by a great 18-piece "big band"!
Currently under the direction of Kurt Thaller, the band was founded in Waltham in 1980 and was first directed by Paul Rooney.  The members, many of them retired professional musicians, receive no compensation for their performances.  Engagement fees are used to provide college scholarships for musically-talented students. To date, they have disbursed more than $130,000 in financial aid.

“Things that Go Bump in the Night: fear in the early 19th century”

This Halloween season, visitors will enjoy a very different kind of tour. “Things that Go Bump in the Night” will offer a window into what frightened our 19th century New England forebears. Battery-powered candle in hand, guests will see several sumptuous rooms plus a few areas not usually open to the public while hearing tales of odd happenings and common fears.
