Robert Roberts:
Author and Abolitionist
While head servant at Gore Place, Roberts authored The House Servant's Directory, one of the earliest American books on domestic service thus becoming one of the first published African-Americans.
As an activist in 19th century Boston's black community, Roberts wrote for Garrison's Liberator and supported his son, Benjamin Franklin Roberts in his suit to desegregate Boston's public schools. The dramatization is now available for middle and high school classes as well as civic and cultural organizations.

Now, your students can enjoy a FREE performance at your school of this dramatic presentation.

On-Site Programs

This is Gore Place!
This program for elementary school students enriches the classroom study of local and state history.

Program includes an hour mansion tour and activity, 2 20-minute hands-on workshops, and 20 minutes at the farm. The workshops and the on-site programs provide students with opportunities to explore early 19th century lifestyles at Gore Place. Through varied aspects of the program students can compare the different lifestyles of the upper class, the working class, and the farming communities—all of which co-existed at Gore Place in the early 1800s. This program has strong connections to the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks.
